Wines of Sonoma

Tucked between the Pacific Ocean and the Mayacamas, Sonoma County is one of California’s most dynamic and diverse wine regions. Though often mentioned alongside its neighbor Napa, Sonoma is larger, more varied, and arguably more exploratory, offering a wide canvas of terroirs and styles that speak of both tradition and innovation.
What makes Sonoma special?
Sonoma’s magic lies in its contrasts. From the cool, fog-draped coastal AVAs like Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast to the sun-soaked vineyards of Dry Creek and Alexander Valley, each zone has its own personality. This climatic range allows winemakers to craft everything from delicate Pinot Noir and fresh, ocean-influenced Chardonnay to bold Cabernet Sauvignon and structured Zinfandel.

But climate is only half the story. Sonoma’s soils are remarkably diverse: volcanic ash, sandy loam, gravel beds, ancient seabeds, etc, creating an ideal environment for nuanced vineyard expression.

A Landscape of grape & style
Pinot Noir thrives in the coastal fog zones, yielding wines of finesse and energy. Chardonnay often crisp, textured, and mineral-driven is a Sonoma hallmark. Meanwhile, Zinfandel has long called Sonoma home, especially in the Dry Creek Valley, where old vines produce spicy, concentrated reds.
Yet Sonoma’s breadth of grape varieties is just as impressive as its terrain. Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and even lesser-known Rhône and Italian varieties all find a place here.

With over 425 wineries, many of them family-owned, the region is a mosaic of passionate artisans who see winemaking as both craft and culture. At the heart of it all is a sense of stewardship. Whether it’s dry-farming century-old vines, installing solar-powered cellars, or planting native flora between vineyard rows, Sonoma winemakers are deeply rooted in the land they tend.
